Care+ Solar Loan Review

Paying for solar that isn't paying off?

Some solar loans can be cancelled, cut down or restructured. Whether yours can depends on how it was sold and what the contract says. A free consultation tells you which, with the numbers to back it up.

The 2-minute check

Does this sound like your deal?

A few quick questions to see whether a consultation makes sense. Answer what you can; “Not sure” is fine. The rest we go through together on a free call.

First, is anything urgent?

Is any of this happening right now?

About your deal

What kind of solar deal is it?

Which company is your monthly payment paid to?

When did you sign?

How it was sold

Were you told solar would get rid of your electric bill, or cut it by a set amount?

Were you told the tax credit, or a "rebate", would pay down your loan?

What it produces

Is the system off, underproducing, or was it never turned on?

Has the installer gone out of business, stopped answering, or refused warranty work?

What you pay

Did your monthly payment go up a year or 18 months in?

Are your solar payment and electric bill together more than your bill was before solar?

Your payback

What you pay now, and what you'd keep

Put in your payment, the years you have left, what you've paid so far and any lump sum like the tax credit. Pick an outcome. You keep paying until it's resolved.

The fee pays for itself

About 41 months after it's cancelled

Return on the fee: 424% (about $5 back for every $1 of fee)

This is your math, not a prediction. A cancelled loan is the best outcome and no one can promise it, and getting past payments back is even less certain. Some deals end with a lower balance or a reset payment instead, which is worth less. Keep making your payments until it's resolved. Your free consultation tells you what's realistic for your deal.

Financing the fee changes your return. The numbers above assume you pay the fee up front unless you turn on “Finance the fee” and pick a term and rate. Interest adds to what the fee costs, so your return is lower. The term and rate there are yours to try, not an offer. Which options you can actually get depends on your credit, and loans come from a licensed lender, not from Care+. See payment options

Your options

Five ways out or down, cheapest first

We tell you which step you're on. If a cheaper one works, that's the one we recommend.

  1. 01

    Call your loan servicer

    Free

Ask for your payoff amount, your payment history, a full copy of your contract, and what it would take to bring the payment back down.

  2. 02

    Fix the system

    Often free

If it's off or underproducing, a warranty claim or a repair may be all you need. If your installer is gone, another one can service it.

  3. 03

    Fix the payment

    Varies

Paying the loan down can reset the payment to where it started.

  4. 04

    Sell or transfer

    Varies

Selling? The loan can usually be paid off at closing, and a lease or PPA can often move to the buyer.

  5. 05

    Challenge the deal

    Our partner

If the sale or the paperwork broke the rules, our resolution partner works to cancel the loan, cut the balance, or remove hidden fees and the lien.

The review

We check the contract and the meter

Most solar problems are in one of three places. We check all three.

What you owe

  • ●What you financed vs. what the system should cost
  • ●Any dealer fee folded into your balance
  • ●Your rate, term and total cost
  • ●Payment resets, and the paydown they assumed
  • ●What you were promised vs. your real bills

What you signed

  • ●Every signature, initial and date
  • ●The copies you were owed
  • ●The cancellation notice: there, right, explained
  • ●Which language the sale was in
  • ●Any filing on your home, and who holds your loan now

What it produces

  • ●What it makes vs. what you were promised
  • ●Permission to operate and inspections
  • ●Whether monitoring works
  • ●Who still stands behind the warranty
  • ●What a repair would cost
What happens

Step by step, from the check to the outcome

The first two steps are free. The rest only happens if you choose to go ahead.

Keep paying the whole time.

Your loan keeps running until it's resolved. A missed payment brings late fees and a mark on your credit. If a payment is going to be hard, tell us early.

Every deal is different, and so is how long it takes.

    Your free consultation

A call of about 20 minutes. We go through how it was sold, what you signed, how it's working and what you pay, and whether our service fits your deal.

  3. 3

    If you go ahead

Sign up, and pay or apply to finance

The fee is in writing before you sign. Pay it up front, or apply with Hearth or Upstart. Once you're approved, you get a secure link to pay.

  4. 4

    Next

    Gather your documents

Send what you have. With your written permission, the rest is requested from the lender. Lender records can take a few weeks.

  5. 5

A formal demand to the lender

Our partner reviews your documents and sends a formal demand to the lender and the installer.

  6. 6

Over the following monthsWith our partner

    Negotiation, or arbitration if needed

Then comes the back and forth with the lender. If it goes to arbitration or court, it takes longer.

  7. 7

    When it's resolvedWith our partner

    The outcome, in writing

If the loan is cancelled, the payments stop, and sometimes past payments come back too. Other outcomes are a lower balance or a reset payment. Nobody can promise which.

Documents that help

The more of these we have, the faster it goes.

You can start without any of them. With your written permission, what's missing can be requested from the lender.

Questions people ask us

Who handles my case?+

Care+ runs the free consultation. If you go ahead, our resolution partner handles your case under its own written agreement with you.

Will this get me out of my loan?+

No one can promise that. Some deals can be cancelled or reduced. Others are legal but overpriced, and a cheaper fix makes more sense. Your free consultation shows you which kind you have.

Should I stop paying while you look?+

No. The loan keeps running until it's resolved, and a missed payment brings late fees, a mark on your credit and possibly a collector. If a payment is going to be hard, call us early.

What does it cost?+

The check and the consultation are free. If you go ahead, the service fee is in writing before you sign. You can pay it up front or apply to pay over time with Hearth or Upstart. Repairs are quoted separately by an installer.

How long does it take?+

The consultation takes about 20 minutes. Resolving a loan takes months, and longer if it goes to arbitration.

My installer went out of business. Now what?+

Your loan usually stays in place, and the company servicing it may have changed. We find out who holds it now, what warranty still applies, and who can service the system.

Who sees my information?+

We use it for your consultation. If you go ahead, we share it with our resolution partner, with your OK. We don't sell it.
